Many of our Makeover Monday spotlights highlight subtle upgrades, expansions, or the switch from pressure treated wood to composite decking material. This project out of Highland, Maryland, however, is quite the transformation! When Fence & Deck Project Consultant Jeff Gottleib first met with homeowners in Howard County, it was quite apparent the existing deck was in very rough shape and unsafe for use. Looking to make use of the space that overlooks a large backyard, Jeff helped our clients to design a beautiful, modern composite deck that will last for decades! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We demoed and hauled away the existing wood deck and screen room, and constructed a new 54′ x 12′ pressure treated wood frame, including a 4′ x 6′ landing leading down to another 4′ x 4′ landing. Demo & haul away existing wood deck and screen room. A rear beam was installed to support the free standing structure, due to the brick material of the house. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new structure supports 676 sq. ft. of Trex Select Woodland Brown decking with hidden fasteners. Woodland Brown is a beautiful dark, umber brown hue and is a great alternative to staining natural wood. Two 12′ seam boards split the deck evenly, with another placed at the steps. White vinyl railing and black round balusters enclose the new space and match the new aesthetic nicely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One set of 4′ wide steps were installed off of the 4′ x 6′ landing leading down to the lower landing, with another set of steps turning left to grade. While the beams and posts were left natural, the deck itself, as well as the steps, are trimmed with white vinyl fascia for a polished look. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
