A multi-level deck greatly expands your outdoor living space and adds various settings for dining, relaxing, and entertaining areas. Homeowners in Crownsville, Maryland loved the layout of their upper and lower decks, but the wood material was showing signs of age, and was rotting and splitting in several areas. While re-constructing their multi-level deck using pressure treated wood was an option, our customers opted to switch to TimberTech composite decking, which will require far less maintenance. This November Project of the Month features beautiful angles and craftsmanship, custom benches, and a lighting package, truly making this backyard one-of-a-kind! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Consultant Joel Lewis met with our Anne Arundel County clients to determine their vision for their new composite, deck, color and design options, and provide an overview of the decking materials and build process. Prior to our work, we helped to obtain a permit for the new deck. Generally, upon building a new deck for your home, you will be required to have a county permit. To obtain the permit, you need a copy of your property plat shows the property lines, and an indication of where the new deck will be constructed. You will also need a drawing of the deck to scale that clearly shows the dimensions of the deck, footer size and depth, beam size, joist size and spacing, decking material to be used, railing system and staircase location, if any.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We first removed the existing decks, landings, stairs, and railings before constructing the new multi-level construction. Between the two decks and side landings and steps, we installed approximately 605 sq. ft. of TimberTech Reserve decking and framing in the beautiful Dark Roast hue. 188′ of Dark Roast feature board nicely frames both the lower and upper decks. Inspired by reclaimed wood, these boards feature a rough wire-brushed, low-gloss finish that highlights the classic cathedral wood grain pattern. In addition, they offer superior scratch resistance and feature Mold Guard™ Technology that protects the plank from the elements and everyday accidents endured by most decks. They have also been third party tested and proven to retain color and offer excellent fade resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White vinyl fascia wraps the decks and beams, white vinyl dresses the support posts, and white vinyl Washington-style railing with black aluminum balusters enclose the upper and lower decks. Instead of gates or extended railings, entryways from the yard pavers on either side of the lower deck for an open, airy look. A Dark Roast composite cap rail accents the main and lower deck railing, and is a design detail that can really provide a “wow factor” on larger deck spaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional accessories and design details were utilized to best match the old deck, with a modern, maintenance-friendly twist. We installed 35′ of custom bench seating in matching TimberTech Dark Roast, providing ample room for guests to sit during a large gathering or intimate backyard BBQ. All sets of stairs were installed with a “picture frame” design, which is an elegant finishing touch. Last but not least, this multi-level deck’s lighting package included five white Nebula eyeball post lights and Sven black Corona riser lights, illuminating the space for after-dark use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
