Project of the Month: An Old Deck Renewed

When customers come to Fence & Deck Connection looking to spruce up their outdoor space, they often want to build upon or expand an existing deck. Doing so is certainly more budget friendly, but unfortunately not always feasible depending on strength, installation methods, or current codes. Decks are one of the only types of remodel work that has framing that is exposed to the elements — year round, your outdoor space is exposed to the sun, changing weather, insects, you name it! As a result, an existing deck’s framing may appear to be in good condition, when it’s actually failing due to a variety of reasons.

Once our knowledgeable Project Consultant David King met with our Maryland clients onsite, we were able to determine that for this particular project, we were able to use the existing framework and resurface the deck. After the existing worn deck boards were removed, our crews were able to get to work to help breathe some new life into this beautiful outdoor area!

BEFORE

Using the existing structure and framework, we then installed 646 sq. ft. of TimberTech Reserve Driftwood decking that runs parallel to the home. Hidden fasteners offer a cleaner, more finished look. The deck was rewrapped with white vinyl fascia and a white vinyl Lincoln-style railing with round black aluminum balusters replaced the old railing. A continuous cap rail in matching Driftwood is a beautiful accent and is a great place to set down a cold beverage on a warm summer day. Lastly we replaced the old wooden trellis with an 8 x 12′ white vinyl trellis — an elegant touch that can be used for lighting, plant hanging, or shade, weather protection, and privacy with the help of woven fabric or to other materials.

AFTER: New TimberTech Decking

This old deck has a new lease on life with the resurface of composite decking material. It’s extremely resistant to moisture intrusion, resistant to stains or fading, and doesn’t require any sanding, staining, or painting. Our clients are preparing for an upcoming wedding celebration this summer and we know this “new” deck is now the perfect space to safely entertain their closest friends and family members.
