In Severn, Maryland, this backyard has been transformed into a serene outdoor escape, blending the beachy tones of Sea Salt Gray with clean architectural lines. While some decks scream for attention, this one whispers sophistication. The homeowners were looking for something modern yet understated — a space to unwind after a long day or host weekend gatherings without the need for bells and whistles. Project Kevin Bullion helped to design a larger, sleek, low-maintenance TimberTech deck, made even more inviting by thoughtful finishes and subtle lighting.

Project Highlights:
Location: Severn, Maryland
Size: Approximately 16’ x 19’ (304 sq. ft.)
Material Used: TimberTech Edge Prime+ in Sea Salt Gray
Orientation: Deck boards run parallel to the home
The newly completed deck measures approximately 16 feet by 19 feet, offering around 304 square feet of outdoor living space. Built using TimberTech Edge Prime+ composite decking in the serene Sea Salt Gray finish, the boards were installed parallel to the home, creating a streamlined and spacious layout that complements the home’s exterior.
Designed as a free-standing structure, the deck stands independently from the house, allowing for enhanced structural flexibility and long-term stability. Before construction began, the existing deck was fully removed and hauled away, giving the project a clean slate. A single set of stairs, 4 feet wide, provides access to the yard. The stairs were carefully designed with handrails mounted on the inside to maximize usable width and maintain a clean visual line.
To give the deck a crisp and refined appearance, white vinyl textured fascia was installed around the perimeter. This bright white finish contrasts beautifully with the soft gray decking. The railing system also blends classic and contemporary design elements: a white Washington-style vinyl handrail is paired with black square aluminum balusters, creating a sophisticated, two-tone look that balances light and dark.
The homeowners opted to elevate the space with a HomeTops light package, which includes three white Saturn post cap lights, two white Nebula eyeball lights, and a transformer with integrated wiring. The lighting package is designed to provide soft, functional lighting in the evening hours. A feature board, also in Sea Salt Gray, frames the deck for added visual interest and a more polished appearance.
To maintain a minimalist and modern aesthetic, no lattice was installed under the deck. Instead, the area below was left with unfinished natural wood, offering the flexibility for future customization while keeping the current design clean and uncluttered.
