Cleaning and Sealing Pressure Treated Decks
Pressure treated decking is a wonderful cost effective element of quality outdoor living space although does require a certain amount of annual maintenance. Here are a couple of annual maintenance tips to keep in mind.
Don't Over Do It!
If not done properly a deck can be completely ruined in the cleaning and sealing process. It is imperative to use no more than 1,000 psi on the power washer and keep the nasal at least 12” from the deck surface. A proper deck cleaning agent will assist in the cleaning process and avoid unnecessary pressure. Excessive pressure can easily raise the grain of the material and completely ruin the deck.
How long do I wait before sealing my deck?
The short answer is as soon as the material is dry enough to accept the sealant. The latest generation of treated lumber actually accepts sealants very well within just a few weeks depending on the weather. This can easily be checked by pouring a cup of water on the deck and examine the absorption rate. If it is beading the deck is not ready. Keep in mind some boards come with a factory wax coating and will not accept a sealant for several months
