Makeover Monday: Mixed Material Decking in Glen Burnie, Maryland

When customers choose to install composite decking, they often design their space with vinyl railing and/or aluminum. Likewise, wood decks are popularly installed with matching wood railing and balusters. While wood decking brings a warm, natural look to outdoor spaces, aluminum railing can offer a modern, clean, and often customizable appearance. The combination can create an attractive contrast that complements the overall design of the deck.

Homeowners in Glen Burnie, Maryland reached out to Fence & Deck Connection looking to freshen up the appearance of their outdoor space. Project Consultant Jake Wolod helped design a beautiful new wood deck that will last for years to come with the proper care and maintenance!

Before:

We first demoed and hauled away the existing wood decking that was visibly in bad shape. We then build a new free-standing pressure-treated wood frame to support 256 sq. ft. of pressure treated wood decking. Instead of wood balusters to enclose the space, our clients designed their deck with mixed materials — wood railing and black round aluminum balusters. This combination offers the natural beauty of wood for the decking area while providing the strength, durability, and sleek appearance of aluminum for the railing.

Additionally, aluminum railings typically require minimal maintenance, as they are resistant to rust and decay. Wood decking may require more maintenance, such as staining or sealing, but the aluminum railing reduces the overall maintenance needs of the entire deck.

After:

When combining wood decking with aluminum railing, it’s important to ensure proper installation and compatibility between the materials. Working with a reputable contractor, like Fence & Deck Connection, can ensure a seamless and secure integration of wood and aluminum components, creating a beautiful and functional outdoor space.
