Building on newly purchased land or purchasing a home from a new build community is an exciting process for homeowners. With a blank slate, you’re able to design your dream home, choosing room layouts, and styles and upgrades for the kitchen, flooring, bathroom materials, etc. Upgrades that are rarely sold in most new home developments or new construction, however, are the fences and decks. When you drive through your neighborhood, you might notice that instead of first or second story decks, there will be French or sliding glass doors with a piece of fence placed directly in front of it. This is so the homeowner can add the deck as an upgrade, or purchase the home as is and build the deck after closing. As we all know, life happens, so sometimes decks don’t get built for years, if ever!
Homeowners in Columbia, Maryland were pleased with their newly built home, but they were missing a usable, elevated outdoor space. They didn’t wait too long after their home was completed, and reached out to Fence & Deck Connection to add the perfect finishing touch. Project Consultant Andrew Vidulich helped design a gorgeous space using Trex composite decking and a sophisticated railing system. Check out the before and afters below!
Before:Â

The foundation of this transformation began with the installation of approximately 270 square feet of Trex Enhance Naturals decking in Rocky Harbor, a soft, versatile gray with natural woodgrain texture that offers the look of real wood without the upkeep. This composite decking is ideal for Maryland’s ever-changing seasons, offering exceptional fade and stain resistance. The decking is complemented by white PVC railings featuring round black aluminum balusters, which provide a striking contrast and open feel. For a premium finish, we installed a 2×4 Azek Vintage cap rail in Dark Hickory, terminating neatly into the posts for a polished, upscale look.
To tie the space together, we wrapped the perimeter of the deck with white PVC fascia, offering a crisp, clean edge and added durability. The underside of the deck remains open-framed, giving the homeowners flexibility for future storage or landscaping options. We also constructed a set of steps leading to grade, with a gate installed at the top for added safety. In addition, two steps were added at the home’s side door entrance without railings, ensuring convenient access while maintaining the home’s overall aesthetics.
