Building a Bigger Deck in Arnold, Maryland: a TimberTech Makeover

There’s nothing quite like a deck that extends your living space to the outdoors. Over time, however, even the best built decks can begin to show their age. That was exactly the case with one of our recent projects in Arnold, Maryland, where a once loved deck off of the home’s second story had started to rot and deteriorate. Our clients wanted a safer, more stylish, and larger outdoor area they could truly enjoy again. Project Consultant Jeff Gottleib helped these homeowners build the deck of their dreams using TimberTech composite decking in a stunning and increasingly popular hue: Coconut Husk!

Before:

The first step was to demo and haul away the existing wood deck. To give the homeowners the expanded space they wanted, we constructed two connected pressure-treated frames — one measuring 15′ x 12′ and another 13’7″ x 8′ to the side. This dual-level layout added dimension and flow to the outdoor space. We also installed a rear beam on the smaller deck for extra support and durability, ensuring the structure was as strong as it was stylish.

For the decking surface, the homeowners chose TimberTech Prime+ in Coconut Husk. Coconut Husk is a a bright, sunny tan color with dark and light golden tones to create an authentic light wood visual. This color is a beautiful alternative to natural wood decking and in general, the Prime+ collection features subtle color blending and a rift- and quarter-sawn straight grain pattern with lighter weight scalloped profile premium polymer capped composite boards.

We secured the first and last boards, as well as the steps, using color-matched screws for a clean, seamless appearance. Between the two decks, we added a matching Coconut Husk seam board, creating a smooth visual transition. To complete the look, we installed white vinyl railings accented with black round balusters for a timeless, modern touch. Unlike the old deck, the new deck includes a set of 4′ wide steps, making it easier than ever to move between the deck and the backyard below. To wrap things up, we trimmed the fascia and sides of the steps with white PVC, giving the entire project a finished look that ties everything together.
