Project of the Month: TimberTech Deck & Cable Railing in Annapolis, MD

There are many ways to make your outdoor space unique – from the decking color, to the railing choices and deck layout to additional features and upgrades such as lighting packages. For homeowners, in Annapolis, Maryland, they decided to take all of the above into consideration when re-designing their lower backyard deck and upper level walkout!

Andrew Vidulich worked with our clients to design upper and lower beautiful, spacious composite decks that provides shade, an unrestricted view, and plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining.

Before: Warped & Rotting Wood Deck

Andrew met with our Anne Arundel County clients to determine their vision for their deck, color and design options, and provide an overview of the decking materials and build process. Prior to our work, we helped to obtain a permit for the new deck. Generally, upon building a new deck for your home, you will be required to have a county permit. To obtain the permit, you need a copy of your property plat shows the property lines, and an indication of where the new deck will be constructed. You will also need a drawing of the deck to scale that clearly shows the dimensions of the deck, footer size and depth, beam size, joist size and spacing, decking material to be used, railing system and staircase location, if any.

Once the design plans were approved, our crews were able to work their magic! We first removed and hauled away 420 sq. ft. of wood decking, before replacing both decks with TimberTech Dark Roast composite decking with matching feature and seam boards. Found in the TimberTech Pro Reserve collection, Dark Roast is a beautiful brown shade inspired by reclaimed wood, featuring a heavy wire-brushed, low-gloss finish and a classic cathedral wood grain pattern. In addition, they offer superior scratch resistance and feature Mold Guard™ Technology that protects the plank from the elements and everyday accidents endured by most decks. They have also been third party tested and proven to retain color and offer excellent fade resistance.

White Victorian-style aluminum railing posts with horizontal cable rail safely encloses both decks. To illuminate the deck at night, Saturn LED lights were installed on the railing post caps. Similar to other types of aluminum railing products, cable railings are highly durable and can easily withstand exposure to all kinds of harsh weather patterns. All cable hardware used in cable railings is made from marine grade stainless steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion and requires minimal maintenance. Additionally, cable railings can easily blend in with any design or style of home, from contemporary homes to traditional homes, thanks to their clean lines — though it does offer a more modern look to the home’s exterior.

To illuminate the deck at night, Saturn LED lights were installed on the railing post caps. Also included in the light package are twelve white Pyxis riser lights placed evenly on each step, resulting in three light lights per step. Together, this entire light package provides a beautiful after-dark ambiance! Last but not least, white textured fascia wraps the deck and risers for an elevated finishing touch.
