Lattice, the criss-cross patterned panels located beneath the lower edges of decks, serves a decorative purpose but also protects the under-deck from pests and debris build-up. Lattice also protects a deck’s integrity by allowing air to circulate beneath the deck where it prevents moisture build-up and subsequent rotting and mildew. Unfortunately, pests and other animals can damage lattice. Additionally, snow, rain and wind can degrade and warp lattice-work. Below, you’ll see the “Before” pictures of this week’s “Makeover Monday,” showing how warped lattice hampers the overall aesthetic of large deck.
BEFORE:
Andrew Vidulich, a Fence & Deck Connection Project Consultant, worked with homeowners (one of which is an amazing Fence & Deck employee!) in Severn, Maryland to transform their warped and outdated deck into a spacious nighttime outdoor escape.
We removed and hauled away the existing deck and installed 500 sq. ft. of TimberTech Reserve decking in Dark Roast. TimberTech composite decking is engineered to last, with coverage including a 30-Year Limited Product Warranty and a 30-Year Limited Fade and Stain Warranty, which are the best among leading manufacturers. Antique Leather feature and seam boards offer a point of interest and a complementary hue. White vinyl fascia, white railings, and square black aluminum balusters brighten up the deck’s perimeter. Seven steps lead up to a gate, which offers a sense of safety and security along with the new railing. One inch white privacy lattice completes the look, and is a striking difference from the dark, warped lattice from the previous deck.
To turn this daytime space into an illuminated nighttime escape, we installed 17 Saturn Annello post cap lights, and black Corona riser lights on every other step.
